What’s your HUSTLE?
Painting and commercial art
How’d you get into this?
Honestly I enjoy drawing and painting and it is a great way to make a passive income from.
How do you find time to work on your paintings after tattooing/drawing/running Social media and all the other tasks we have as tattooers?
I need to have a creative outlet where I can draw what I want. Often I will make a piece as a painting and then offer it as a tattoo. That way I somewhat cross market painting with tattooing and I get to tattoo a design I have already fully rendered. Then the tattoo is done at its fullest potential. I do unfortunately neglect my emails and social media a bit because of this but I am working out a process to get better with that.
You think it’s important for tattooers to have other creative outlets?
I do. I think it fuels our drive to do better at tattooing. It is the least we can do. I mean these people getting the tattoos will quite literally be bringing our work to the grave. It is an honor.
Do you have a creative outlet that you’d rather not turn into a hustle? Something just for YOU that helps you escape or relax?
To be honest with my painting I turn down 95% of my commissions. As soon as I have someone to answer to on a “fun” side project it becomes something I have to do as opposed to something I want to do.
Do you have a bigger picture or a vision of where this could take you?
I am just collectively adding small side projects that will provide royalties to build a passive income to lean on. Hopefully help me out in the future if tattooing is not an option anymore.
Any Advice for Tattooers that are interested in building up a new creative outlet?
Tattooing is your backbone income. It is fun but you have to do it. Make your side hustle something that you don’t have to do but you want to do. If you lose time while you are doing it then it is what you should do. Create because you love the action of it. Not so much for the end product.
Shoutouts?
To everyone who busts their asses because they love and respect the action of creating.
